On a lonely highway, between fields of wheat, a bright red truck can be seen, speeding down the highway. Inside the truck, the driver, one Jared Padalecki was castigating himself, silently of course, for a supremely bad idea.
It hadn’t seemed so bad a few days ago, when Jensen had sent the divorce papers back, again unsigned. At that time it had seemed like the only option. And it wasn’t like he had never seen Jensen since they had started proceedings, this would be perfectly fine.
Only now, five minutes before he was going to see his husband, ex-husband, again Jared saw himself for the liar he was. This was a really bad idea. He wasn’t ready to see Jensen, wasn’t prepared for this final step, even if it had been coming for months now. But there was nothing he could do about it.
He was with sandy now; beautiful, funny, sweet, smart
Five minutes before she was about to meet her fiancés ex husband, sandy McCoy finally got fed up of the silence. It had been this was since they left eh motel, Jared just brooding, well brooding and driving anyway. Apparently this ‘seeing Jensen’ thing was a very serious matter, and if things were really so dire she thought she ought to know. So five minutes before the meeting of doom, as she found herself calling it secretly, she spoke up.
“Jare? Is everything ok?”
Shit he was worrying sandy. He should not even have brought her with him. Except she had insisted, seemed to think it was a good idea for them to get away before he started his new job, and the wedding and stuff; a chance to bond. He didn’t know how many other couples bonded over their divorce from another person going through but hey sandy and he had always had a unique relationship. “Everything’s fine Sand. I'm just kinda worried bout how this’ll go. I mean he’s refused to sign the papers so many times before, what if he does again”
Jared, would he really refuse once you tell him about the engagement? I mean at sometime in his life his priority was making you happy, so would he really stop you if you decided that was not with him?
Not really, that’s not Jen. See that’s why I need you, otherwise I’d be constantly completely emo.
You know it! Now come here and give me a kiss
Eyes still focused on sandy and her cheeky smirk, Jared prepared to turn into the space next to the field, which the team had made a lot. Tall grass on either side made it hard to see and distracted, he didn’t notice the van that was actually right in his way. Didn’t notice, that is until the turn had already been made, by which time it was too late.
Swerving to avoid it, he stepped on the accelerator, rather than the brake and his truck shot off across the lot. Right at Jensen who was standing watching the clouds trying to gauge the direction they should head in next. Somebody shouted and Jensen turned. Jared could see him through the windshield, frozen as if a deer in headlights, could feel the car moving, fast, too fast. He had his foot on the brake now but Jensen was close, too close and Sandy was houting next to him and Jensen... god oh god.
And then with an almighty jerk, the car stopped, throwing both of them against their restraints. When the pressure released he looked up stopped in time, please in time, but Jensen was nowhere to be seen.
Jared jumped out of the car as soon as he was out of his seat belt, eyes searching everywhere before thank god seeing Jensen, in a slight ditch on the side of the road, where he had obviously jumped to safety. He was laying there, still winded from hitting the ground when he received an armful of worried Padalecki, knocking the breath out of him all over again, but for a different reason Jensen’s mind supplied unnecessarily.
Jared was frantic, running his hands over Jensen’s body, as much to reassure himself Jen was safe, as to check for injures. “Jen, you okay? You hurt? God did I hit you?? You hurt? Jeez I'm so sorry... so so sorry…”
It took Jensen repeating his name several times before Jared started listening to what he was saying. “I'm fine Jay, stop... stop... Jay… I'm perfectly okay, dusty and bruised but otherwise good, don’t worry” He could see that his words were starting to sink in; Jared no longer had that panicked look in his eye.
But with worry no longer clouding his mind, Jared had plenty of time to take in the position they were in and this really wasn’t any better. He was damn near straddling Jensen on the ground, could feel hands gripping his biceps while his own registered the firm muscles of Jensen’s stomach, where they had come to rest. Well, shit…
Body still sizzling from the contact after being denied for so long, Jared scrambled gracelessly off of Jensen, then as if remembering himself stuck his hand out to help the other man up. He looked good, Jared admitted in the silence of his mind, really, really good. His face still had those lovely laugh crinkles at the sides of his eyes and his skin shone, even in the dull sunlight. The hair was new, short and spiky but it suited him Jared decided, somehow emphasising the emerald of his eyes even more. Yeah…Jensen looked good. And felt even better some part of his mind acknowledged, but the less he thought about that the better.
Jensen let the younger man pull him up, his own body still at full attention, his mind reeling from the too brief contact; appreciating, like always, the strength of those graceful hands. Jared looked the same, yet different. He still had the floppy brown hair and the lean, muscular physique, but now his body was covered in designer jeans and a crisp shirt. Jensen missed his old ratty t-shirt and sweat pants; at least that version was Jared, not some cleaned up yuppie. And as much as he wanted to feel those hands on other parts of his body, things were no longer the same between them either. Ok say something Ackles, you can’t just stare at the fellow.
“Whoa Jay, helluva way to make an entrance, don’t cha think?….you want the whole world to know where you are??”. A big grin on his face, Jensen used his grip on Jared’s hand to pull him in for a brief before letting him go, saying “ But then you always did go your own way, dint cha?”
At those words Jensen felt Jared stiffen, all the tension that had been released on finding Jensen unharmed returning, to settle like a lead weight in his chest. How clearly he remembered the last time Jensen had said exactly that, exactly those words. Jared had just told him he no longer wanted to be just a chaser, that he wanted more. Only that time the tone was slightly different, more contempt and scorn. How clearly he remembered that fight, hurtful and dirty, the two of them screaming at each other and that last sound- the snick of the door closing as he left- so innocuous a sound for something that was so final. The frozen look on Jensen’s face showed that he remembered too. Jensen opened his mouth but before he could say anything, he was distracted by something behind Jared.
‘Jare? Is everything ok?’ Shit,
As he watched the women wrap herself all around his husband, Jensen wondered how it was possible to hate someone before you’d even been introduced to them. This must be Jared’s new thing, his girlfriend.
“Hey, I’m Jensen, Jared’s husband--”
“--Ex-husband”, Jared cried, feeling for some reason like he was trapped in a tiger’s cage; and the cats were circling.
“—and you must be Sunday, Jared mentioned you the last time we met” Jensen ignored what Jared was saying, too intent on this thing, whatever it was with Jared’s new person. He could see in her eyes she recognised the statement for what it was.
“
“Right, sorry, Sandy. Well as I said I’m Jensen, Jared’s soon to be ex-husband”
“Well, I hope so, anyway”.
For a second Jensen just stood there, feeling as if he had been punched in the stomach, hard. “Honeymoon? You’re getting married?”
Luckily for him, Mike chose just that moment to come bounding up, all big grin and endless enthusiasm, obviously having heard the news that Jensen, in his shock, had broadcast around the lot.
“Big Jay….. tying the knot man… very cool ….very cool, only problem is, my invitation seems to have got lost in the mail…. Coz you wouldn’t forget to invite little old me, now would you?”
At that Jared let out his that big laugh of his; clapping his hands like a seal. “As if I would let you come, man. You’d probably try to hump my grandmother”
“Honestly Jay, such an attitude….. Even the elderly deserve love you know”
“Disgusting, man. That’s my Grams you talkin’ bout”. Feeling his equilibrium return after his jolting encounter with Jensen, Jared gave a bemused sandy a squeeze. “Anyway man, we haven’t even set a date yet. Cant, really. At least not until the divorce goes through” at that Jared finally remembered where they were, what he had come here for. He turned to Jensen.
While Jared was talking to mike, Jensen’s brain had been trying to understand what he had heard. It was real…. This whole divorce thing was real…. He hadn’t really considered it until now, that Jared would actually leave him, go through with it. In the back of his mind, even as they had shouting matches from opposite sides of a litigation table he had always thought that they would work it out before the end. But now Jared had taken that option away and Jensen was like a puppet with his strings cut. What was he supposed to do now?
The word ‘divorce’ on Jared’s lips, thankfully, dragged him out of his stupor and by the time everyone turned to him Jensen had schooled his face into a grin; even if, to his own mind, it was too bright.
“I guess congratulations are in order. So… congratulations…….” Need to be out of there, right now, right this second. “I’ll just go get the papers. The sooner the better, right?” False cheer but at that moment Jensen really didn’t care .
Watching Jensen walk towards his truck Jared felt uncomfortable. Like he had done something wrong, missed a step. Maybe he should have warned Jensen before…. Leaving sandy with mike ill be just a second, honey he followed Jensen to the old pick-up. “Jensen---“
“Here you go”
Jared took the papers from him, nodding his head in silent acknowledgement unsure what to say to make this less awkward. It probably wasn’t a good idea to say thank you for signing the divorce papers. Still, he wanted to say something. This had gone much better than he had thought it would. After all the fight and ‘negotiations’, when it came right down to it Jensen had just let him go. All that was left to do was file the papers and their marriage would be over.
Ignoring the hollow feeling in his chest Jared turned to find
“Wait a second… you missed a page.”
Damn. Jensen had forgotten about that, his damned last ditch effort to keep him and Jared married. Right now, he really wished he had just given up. Because then this would be over. Then he would be able to get away, far, far way from Jared. And her.Then…. maybe… he would be able to breathe.
“What?”
Jared flipped to the last page, where the blank space next to the ‘sign here’ post it could be seen, clear and stark against the maze of type. “Right here”
Jensen couldn’t let Jared see how much this hurt, how desperate he really was… had been... whatever, to keep them together. Not when Jared didn’t care anymore, about him…. about them. He had to make this look good.
“Where did that come from?”
He took the papers back from Jared…… pretending to read….pretending he had never sent that particular page before, when he had spent hours staring at it. Staring at the words, reading them over and over as if to squeeze some lasting meaning from them, some explanation as to how everything had gone so wrong. Sometimes, at night, feeling the lonely cold wrap around him, staring and willing his hand to stop trembling and just sign. Wishing himself to just let go … let Jared go... let… go.
Jared watched in disbelief. “What are you doing?” He should have known it was too easy. Jensen was just screwing with him as always.
“I’m rea…ding.” Slow as molasses, as if Jared was a child, to thick to understand.
“It’s the same as it was the last time we did this. For god’s sake could you please just sign it already so that w can get out of here?”
His heart plummeting, Jensen nodded quietly. He should finish this. But just as he lay the papers back down to sign, Alona came running up. She had been on the phone with the weather bureau the entire time.* “Jen, we’ve got major action the NSSL says the caps are breaking. The towers going up 30 miles up the dry line”*
In that moment Jensen forgot the papers and looked up to the sky. He felt the excitement of the day swell up inside him. Today…. today he... they …would do it, finally. “All right, let’s go” he screamed and the whole team scrambled to get ready, to pack up. They were on the move. Thrusting the papers at Jared he made towards one of the vans where Eric and Bill were trying to get the equipment, cameras and Doppler and the rest of it, put away.
“Jen---” Jared called after him, stopping him mid stride. Suddenly Jensen remembered that the divorce papers weren’t the real reason he got Jared out here.
“Jay we have to go, you know that---” Jared nodded. He may no longer be a storm chaser but he still felt the thrill in his blood. He still knew how it was. “—but you should come with us.”
“Jen, you know—“
“No Jay, you need to be there, at least today. Even if it’s the last time. Today Jared, please.”
“Why, Jen? I’m done with this, given it up months ago” – when I left you “Why now?”
“Because of Dorothy Jay…..she’s here…we, the team and me, finally did it, and today she’s gonna shine.” Dorothy, Jared thought with reverence. Dorothy. His idea but their dream, both of them. A tornado instrument pack to get information from inside the eye, to make the lives of so many people safer, for better warning systems. Jared could here the pride in Jensen’s voice for their accomplishment, for what his team had done, and he could hear the sadness in his next words. “But it won’t be right without you there”
Before Jared could reply Kim pulled up next to them in his Winnebago, screaming at Jensen “Jen, come on. We gotta get going, now.” He raised his eyebrow, amusement in every line of his weathered face. “Unless you would prefer to catch the next tornado”
“I’m coming, I’m coming” Jensen shouted, waving the other man off before turning back to Jared. “Think about it, Jay.” And just like that he was gone, sprinting towards his truck, throwing himself into the driver’s seat and slamming the door.
Jared stood there a moment watching them pull away, divorce papers, unsigned divorce papers at his side. He should come back another day, when Jensen wasn’t so busy. But even as he said that, he knew that he wouldn’t. He was going, had decided to go the moment he heard that pleading tone in Jensen’s voice, because Jensen never begged because Jared could never deny him if he did. And because he wanted to.
“Jare?”
“
“Go, Jare.” She smiled her beautiful smile at him “It’s fine with me”
There was a reason he loved her. “Okay, okay. Let’s go. We gotta go quick to catch up with them, but at the first stop you can take the truck and go back the motel, I’ll ride the rest of the day with Jen and I’ll meet you back there tomorrow”
Jared was already following in the tracks of the group before him, possibly a little faster than he was supposed to, but he didn’t wan to lose them. With Eric’s directions they could end up on some road where he would never find them.
“No, Jare. I’d like to come with you. When you used to say you chased tornados I thought I always thought it was a metaphor but this, this sounds really interesting” and it’s a part of you that you have never shared with me, she didn’t add, but that was how she felt. Watching Jared, as he watched them pull away, the envy on his face so clear. If she could witness this today she might understand those parts of Jared he kept closed to her. If he would share this with her then maybe they would really be okay.
“Its fine, babe” Jared had never really talked to sandy about chasing, mostly because it was something not many people could understand, only other chasers. And Jensen, his mind whispered, but that was neither here nor there. Still the fact that
Decision made, Jared stepped on the accelerator.
